VersionRules v1 · sha ba68a516 · data to Nov 3, 2026How we test strategies
Exact rules
  1. Hold an equal mix of eight 2x single-stock funds, shrunk toward cash when the mix's recent swings pass a cap.
  2. A rule reads the close of the last trading day of the month and trades at the next close.
  3. The universe is 8 funds; the benchmark is SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY).
  4. It is checked at each month end.
What we cannot measure
  • The paper scales a stock index by last month's variance; this scales an equal mix of 2x stock funds by last month's volatility, a change ETFIQ made.
  • Simulated days do not charge the financing cost of the borrowed half or swap spreads, so they run high.
  • Taxes.
  • The universe is fixed in hindsight: the funds named are those that exist and are large in 2026, so every result flatters a strategy a reader could have run only with this list in 2013.
