In plain words

Overlap is the share of two funds’ holdings that is the same. For each company both own, ETFIQ takes the smaller of the two weights and adds them up. Identical funds have 100% overlap; funds sharing nothing have 0%. Cash is never counted.

Of 37,717 pairs compared, 7.5% share more than half their weight; the most alike reach 100%. Two funds with different names and issuers can be close to the same thing, so owning several does not always spread your money. The overlap tool shows how much of a portfolio is the same company through different funds.

Questions

Why does overlap matter?

Funds with high overlap move together. Owning both adds little spread.

How is overlap measured?

For each company both funds own, take the smaller weight, then add them up. Cash is not counted.

Where can I check my own funds?

The overlap tool compares any two, and My portfolio looks through all of them.
