How do you see what an ETF really owns?

Share
In short
  • As of Nov 4, 2026, ETFIQ lists the holdings of 3,495 ETFs, a median of 94 positions, with 50% in the top ten of a theme fund.

In plain words

The name says what a fund hopes to be; the holdings say what it is. Open the holdings and check three things: how many positions, how much sits in the top ten, and how much is not plain stock or bond.

Funds that look different can own much the same: of 37,717 pairs, 7.5% share more than half their weight. A fund of funds hides its holdings one level down, so look through. The portfolio tool adds up what you own company by company across every fund.

Questions

Can the name mislead?

Yes. A fund called “AI” may own mostly well known tech stocks that a broad fund also owns.

What is look-through?

Reading a fund of funds down to the companies inside the funds it owns.

Where do I start?

Open the fund’s holdings page, or add your funds to My portfolio.
