The first way is the one the label describes. A buffer absorbs a stated range of losses and nothing beyond it. Once the reference has fallen further than the buffer is deep, every further point reaches the holder. That is the design working, not failing.

The second is where the buffer starts. 55 of the 431 funds here protect from 0.02 to 20.3775 points below zero, not from zero, so the first 0.02 to 20.3775 points of a fall are the holder’s before any protection begins. Fund names call these floor and ultra buffer strategies. The deeper protection they advertise is bought with that first slice. ETFIQ shows where each buffer starts and ends, not a single depth.

The third is timing. The buffer and, where there is one, the cap are struck on the first day of the outcome period, and a mid-period buyer gets whatever is left of them. Buying after the reference has already fallen means less buffer beneath and more room to any cap. Buying after it has risen means the reverse. The advertised numbers describe day one. What is left today is published here for every fund.

The fourth is selling early. The outcome applies over the whole period and nowhere inside it. A fund sold halfway through sells at whatever its options are worth that day, which can be below the protected value even while the reference sits inside the buffer.
