In plain words

An inflation-protected bond ETF owns US Treasury bonds whose principal rises with consumer prices, called TIPS. When prices rise, the bond’s value and interest payments rise with them.

ETFIQ counts 16 funds, at a median fee of 0.10%, the lowest of the bond groups compared here. Short-term versions own TIPS that mature soon and move less when rates change. The protection is against inflation over the bond’s life, not against a price fall, so a TIPS fund can still drop when rates rise. Read the duration on each fund page.
