Reading a crypto ETF: the vocabulary in plain words
What tracking difference, spot, sponsor and staking mean on a crypto ETF, and why two returns cannot always be subtracted.
You can subtract two returns while both are small, and the result is the gap between them. Once they grow far apart, it stops being true. A trust that returned +622.7% against a coin that returned +1,840.8% is 1,218 points behind. That is correct, and it tells a holder who has seven times their money nothing they can use. In that case ETFIQ prints the ratio of the two growth factors instead, as a share of the coin’s own growth, and labels it as a ratio, not points. 21 of the 70 funds in this category are in that state today. Both forms appear in the same column, and each says which it is.
- 01Tracking difference
- The fund’s total return minus the coin’s over exactly the same days, in percentage points. The fee, the custody cost, the creation and redemption friction and whatever the market paid for the shares, all of it, in one number.
- 02Spot
- The fund holds the coin itself, through a custodian, rather than futures on it or shares in companies that own it. Only spot funds are in this category; the others are measured where they belong.
- 03Sponsor
- Who runs the fund. Most spot crypto ETFs are 1933 Act trusts rather than registered investment companies, so they have a sponsor rather than an adviser, and file a 10-K rather than an N-PORT.
- 04Thinly quoted
- A fund whose price sat unchanged on more than one trading day in twenty. Its quoted return is what somebody paid on the days anyone traded, which is not the same thing as what the fund did, so ETFIQ shows it and does not rank it against funds that trade.
- 05Staking
- Only proof of stake coins can be staked, so it exists for ether and Solana funds and cannot exist for a bitcoin one. Where a fund stakes, the yield and the sponsor’s share of it are terms in its own filings.
