How the band works

From data · Oct 27, 2026

A buffer fund gives up gains above its cap in return for taking the first part of a loss. A 0 to 15 buffer absorbs the first 15 points of a fall; a 5 to 30 buffer leaves the first 5 points with you and absorbs the next 25. Both only hold for a full period, reset to reset. Bought part way, the numbers change: see Buffer entry point.

Questions people ask

Does the outcome hold if I buy today?
No. The band is set at reset. Bought later, the cap left and the distance to the buffer both change with the index. The entry point tool shows what is left today.
Why do two funds with the same buffer have different caps?
The cap is what the options market offered on the reset day. It moves with volatility and rates, so each series is priced on its own.
Are fees included?
No. The outcome is before fees, in the index’s terms. Each fund’s fee is on its page.
Which funds are left out?
Funds on another index, and dual-directional or accelerated funds, whose payoff needs terms this tool does not draw: 69 of the S&P 500 buffer funds.
