What a coin costs in a brokerage account
Of the 40 spot crypto ETFs ETFIQ can measure on Sep 11, 2026, 28 finished within a point of the coin they hold, and the typical difference is 0.80%. That difference is the fee, the custody, the friction of creating and redeeming shares in blocks and whatever the market paid for the shares rather than for the coin, all together, and it is the only figure on this desk the sponsor does not publish itself.
8 coins are represented across 43 exchange traded funds. A coin with several funds on it is where the difference is worth reading: the coin's own move is the same for all of them, so what separates the funds is what each one costs to hold.
3 trusts are quoted too thinly to compare, closing unchanged on more than one trading day in twenty. Their difference against the coin describes the days somebody traded rather than what the fund did, and they are published with that said rather than ranked.
23 fund-windows cannot state their gap by subtraction at all. Once either return has compounded, the difference of two returns is dominated by the compounding: $ETHE since January 2020 returned +627.8% against Ether's +1,854.4%, which subtracts to -1,227 points and means nothing. The compounded gap is -62.8%, and that is what the site prints for those windows.
A brokerage account and a coin wallet do not cost the same thing to hold the same asset, and the gap between them is the subject here. Of the 40 spot crypto ETFs ETFIQ can measure as of September 11, 2026, 28 closed within a point of the coin they hold, and the typical difference across the group is 0.80%. That figure is what is left over once the coin's own move is stripped out: the fee, the custody arrangement, the mechanics of creating and redeeming shares in blocks, and whatever else separates the price of the shares from the price of the coin. It is the one number on this desk that no sponsor publishes itself.
Eight coins are spread across 43 funds, and where several funds track the same coin, the comparison is cleanest, because the coin's move is identical for all of them. Bitcoin has 12 funds with a median difference of +0.5% and 11 of 11 within a point; its median coin return over the period was −33.2%. Ether has 11 funds, a median difference of +0.8%, and 7 of 10 within a point, against a median coin return of −43.6%. Solana's 8 funds show a median difference of +1.0% with 4 of 8 within a point, alongside a median coin return of +53.4%. XRP's 4 funds all sit within a point, at a median difference of +0.5%, with the coin itself up 19.8%. Avalanche's 3 funds carry a median difference of +1.1%, with only 1 of 3 within a point. Dogecoin's 3 funds all miss by more than a point, with a median difference of −1.6% against a coin return of −1.9%. Chainlink and Litecoin each have a single fund; Chainlink's difference is +0.8%, and Litecoin's figures are not shown.
Individual funds fill out the picture. Among Ether funds, ETHB shows a difference of +2.2%, while six others, including ETHV, ETHW, EZET, QETH, ETHA and FETH, each show +0.8%. Among Solana funds, BSOL leads at +1.6%, with SOEZ, VSOL, QSOL and TSOL trailing between +1.4% and +0.9%. Bitcoin funds cluster tightly, with HODL at +0.6% and most others, including BRRR, ARKB, BITB, FBTC, IBIT, BTC and BTCO, at +0.5%. Dogecoin funds run the other way, with GDOG at −1.5%, BWOW at −1.6%, and TDOG at −1.7%.
Three trusts are quoted too thinly to compare on this measure, closing unchanged on more than one trading day in twenty; their difference figures describe the days someone happened to trade rather than what the fund did, and they are shown here without being ranked against the rest.
Separately, 23 fund-windows cannot state their gap by subtraction once returns have compounded far enough. ETHE since January 2020 returned +627.8% against Ether's own +1,854.4%; subtracting gives -1,227 points, a number with no meaning. For those windows the site instead prints the gap between growth factors, which for ETHE comes to -62.8%.

Method. ETFIQ calculations from Tiingo end-of-day closes for each fund and Tiingo crypto closes for the coin it holds, read at the same two dates so that a weekend move belongs to the day it is realised on. The difference is the fund’s total return minus the coin’s. Where either return has compounded far enough that subtraction no longer states the gap, the gap between the two growth factors is published instead. Thinly quoted trusts are shown and not ranked. Medians across funds. Data file: https://etfiq.com/data/crypto.json. Rebuilt every trading night. ETFIQ is an independent publisher and makes no recommendations. Standards
