The state of buffer ETFs

On Sep 11, 2026, 80 of 273 buffer ETFs across 4 issuers sat at their cap, so in index terms those funds have no further upside this period.

39 funds had their buffer absorbing losses. The median fund could still gain 5.4% from its current price and could fall 5.3% before its buffer begins, by the issuers' own figures.

Funds resetting soonest carry the least remaining cap, because their index has had the most time to rise toward it; the fresh caps sit in the months that reset last.

ETFIQ Narrative

As of September 11, 2026, the buffer ETF landscape covered 273 funds across four issuers: Innovator, First Trust, AllianzIM, and Calamos. Of these, 80 funds, or 29%, sat at their cap, meaning the underlying index has already risen far enough that those funds have no further upside for the remainder of their outcome period. Another 154 funds, or 56%, remained open, with room to move before hitting either their cap or their buffer. The remaining 39 funds, 14% of the total, had their buffer already absorbing losses, meaning the index has fallen enough to put the downside protection to work.

Across all funds, the median fund could still gain 5.4% from its current price and could fall 5.3% before its buffer would begin absorbing further losses, based on the issuers' own published figures.

The pattern varied by issuer. Innovator, with 107 funds, had 29 at cap and 17 with buffers working; its median fund could still gain 5.9% and had 5.5% of room before the buffer engaged. First Trust, with 81 funds, had 30 at cap and 8 with buffers working, a median remaining gain of 4.7%, and the widest median cushion before buffer engagement at 7.3%. AllianzIM's 55 funds had 9 at cap and 8 with buffers working, a median gain potential of 5.0% and a median cushion of 4.8%. Calamos, with 30 funds, had 12 at cap and 6 with buffers working; its median cushion before buffer engagement was 3.3%, the narrowest among the four issuers, with no median gain figure reported.

Looking ahead by reset month, a clear pattern emerged: funds resetting soonest had the least remaining cap room, while funds with resets further out carried more room to grow before hitting their ceiling. For the period ending September 2026, 44 funds were tracked, 21 of them at cap, with a median remaining gain of just 1.0% and a median index move since the period started of +14.7%. This pattern loosened as reset dates moved further out. By April 2027, only 1 of 19 funds sat at cap, with a median remaining gain of 8.3%. By August 2027, none of the 18 funds tracked were at cap, and the median remaining gain reached 15.8%, alongside a median index move since period start of −0.4%. This reflects the underlying mechanics of these products: the longer a fund has been running toward its reset date, the more time its tracked index has had to move toward, or past, the cap set at the start of the period.
