The state of buffer ETFs

On Sep 10, 2026, 67 of 273 buffer ETFs across 4 issuers sat at their cap, so in index terms those funds have no further upside this period.

42 funds had their buffer absorbing losses. The median fund could still gain 5.9% from its current price and could fall 4.9% before its buffer begins, by the issuers' own figures.

Funds resetting soonest carry the least remaining cap, because their index has had the most time to rise toward it; the fresh caps sit in the months that reset last.

ETFIQ Narrative

Across the 273 buffer ETFs tracked from 4 issuers, the market snapshot for Sep 10, 2026 shows a familiar three-way split. Of the total, 67 funds, or 25%, sit at their cap, meaning the index they track has already risen far enough that those funds have no further upside for this period. Another 42 funds, or 15%, have moved into the zone where their buffer is absorbing losses, cushioning investors against a decline that has already begun. The remaining 164 funds, or 60%, are open, sitting between those two states. For the median fund across all issuers, the numbers by the issuers' own figures show 5.9% of further gain still available before hitting a cap, and room to fall 4.9% before the buffer starts to work.

The issuer breakdown shows some variation in where funds stand. Innovator, with 107 funds, has 24 at cap and 17 with buffers working, a median remaining gain of 6.3% and a median cushion of 5.3% before losses reach the buffer. First Trust, with 81 funds, has more at cap in absolute terms, 26, and fewer with buffers active, 10; its median fund can still gain 5.0% and can fall 6.9% before the buffer starts. AllianzIM, with 55 funds, has only 5 at cap and 8 with buffers working, a median gain still available of 5.6% and a cushion of 4.1%. Calamos, the smallest group with 30 funds, has 12 at cap and 7 with buffers working; its median fall-before-buffer figure is 3.1%, with no median gain figure listed. Expense ratios across issuers sit at either 0.80% or 0.70%.

Looking ahead by reset month, the pattern connects the amount of remaining cap to how much time is left before a fund resets. Funds resetting soonest, in Sep 2026, show the smallest median remaining gain, 1.4%, alongside the largest median index move since the period started, +13.7%, and the highest count at cap, 20 out of 44 funds. As reset dates move further out, the picture shifts: by Apr 2027, no funds in that month are at cap, and the median remaining gain rises to 8.8%, with the index having moved only +5.5% since that period began. The trend continues into later months; Aug 2027 shows a median remaining gain of 16.5%, alongside a median index move of −1.2%, and zero funds at cap. This reflects the report's underlying point: funds with more time left before reset have had less opportunity for their tracked index to climb toward the ceiling, leaving more headroom on paper.
